Pediatric dentistry, also known as pediatric odontology, is a branch of dentistry focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases in children and adolescents. This field is not only a university specialization but is also crucial for the development of oral health from early childhood.

The importance of primary dentition
Primary teeth, commonly referred to as “baby teeth“, play a fundamental role in the development of the mouth and oral functions.
Despite being temporary, primary teeth are essential for ensuring proper chewing, speech development, and maintaining the necessary space for the eventual eruption of permanent teeth.
Preserving primary teeth is therefore crucial to avoid future orthodontic and functional issues.
A preventive and educational approach
A key element of pediatric dentistry is early education in dental care for children. It is recommended that dental visits begin around the age of 3-4. This period is strategically important to establish a positive relationship between the child and the dentist. Introducing the child to the dental environment in a non-traumatic way helps build trust and familiarity, reducing anxiety and fear in the future. This way, if emergencies or the need for more complex treatments arise later in life, the child will already feel comfortable with the dentist and dental procedures.
Pediatric dental treatments
Pediatric dentistry addresses the care of both primary and permanent teeth during the developmental years, typically from birth until around 13 years of age. Common treatments include cavity management, root canal treatment of primary teeth, and the handling of dental trauma. Root canal treatment in primary teeth, in particular, aims to preserve teeth affected by decay or trauma, preventing premature extraction and supporting the proper development of permanent dentition.
